The Board of the Dock Sud Port approved by majority the extension of the permission to use the port space currently used by the company EXOLGAN for a period of 10 years, starting from August 5, 2025, the date on which the current permit expires. This decision involves carrying out an infrastructure project that includes the demolition of the current docking site and the construction of a new dock approximately 750 meters long, with an estimated investment of 95,053,000 dollars and a complementary investment of 48,000,000 dollars during the ten years of concession.
Julián Álvarez, who assumed his role in the consortium on April 4, 2024, has been demanding that the companies operating in the port be held responsible for the damage caused to the road infrastructure of the surrounding districts (Avellaneda, Lanús, and Quilmes) due to the inevitable expansion of the port and its logistical implications. This claim is related to a legal case in which the Mayors of Lanús and Quilmes seek compensation for damages and losses, to demonstrate the possible negative effects of the expansion.
One of the fundamental reasons for the rejection of the port expansion project is that, as it is expressed, this would deepen the environmental damage and affect the urban infrastructure of the roads to and from the port. The Mayor of Lanús has expressed opposition to this initiative, considering that the required standards of transparency and free competition are not being met by avoiding international public bidding.
In the words of the Mayor of Lanús during the Board meeting on November 14, "The expansion of the port will deepen environmental damage and harm the urban infrastructure of the roads that go to and from the port." The rejection stance is based on the negative impact expected in the region, both in environmental terms and on the existing infrastructure.
